Interview with the Pilates Instructor Kate Davies
We hopped over to NYC to ask Kate Davies about her view on Hot Pilates.
Kate Davies is inspiring the world to practice more Bikram Yoga and Hot Pilates through her many retreats and opening of her own studio, YO BK, which have two locations in Brooklyn. It is a must visit, when you are in New York next time.
1. WHO IS KATE?
I am the owner of YO BK studios in Brooklyn, New York City. I started practicing Hot Yoga at the age of 18 in college and it has been an important part of my life since then. I am passionate about teaching, developing my community and living my biggest life possible! When I am not at the studios, I love to read and spend time with my sweet pup, Ruby.
2. WHAT IS YOUR LIFE MOTTO?
No matter how far you travel, you can never get away from yourself. – Haruki Murakami
3. WHAT ARE YOU EXTRA CURIOUS ABOUT RIGHT NOW?
Right now I am extra curious about Aerial Yoga, which we will be adding at the studios soon!
4. WHAT IS A BEAUTIFUL BODY TO YOU?
A beautiful body is one that moves with grace and feels like home.
5. WHY IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVEMENT?
I love our Hot Pilates cardio move, wide legged half burpees. They are high-intensity, low impact. I like them because I’m good at them 😉
6. WHAT IS THE PERFECT HOT PILATES OUTFIT?
Anything that moves with the body and doesn’t have to be readjusted during class.
7. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOT PILATES AND HOT YOGA (BIKRAM YOGA)?
Bikram Yoga moves at a slower pace and is disciplined, strength-based and deeply self-reflective. Hot Pilates, by contrast, is fast-paced, fun and varied. Our rooms have disco balls, club lighting and energetic music. You get a kick ass workout and feel like you had a night out on the town — even at 6 am!
8. IN YOUR OPINION, WHY IS HOT PILATES SUCH A GOOD WORKOUT?
Hot Pilates is a great workout because it is challenging, fun and safe. Our students get addicted to how good they feel after class and by how quickly their bodies change. Our classes sell out and we are constantly adding more Hot Pilates classes to our schedule.
9. WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT WHEN JOINING YOUR STUDIO?
You can expect to have fun, be challenged and be held accountable for how you interact with others.
10. WHAT IS POWER TO YOU?
Power is the awareness to know when to speed up and when to slow down.
11. ANY UPCOMING PILATES EVENTS?
We host “Rave” classes on the First Friday of each month with blacklights and body paint. The class is a 90 minute mash-up of Hot Pilates and Yin Yoga. All proceeds from class are donated to Africa Yoga Project, an amazing non-profit that trains yoga teachers in Kenya and offers free yoga classes to thousands weekly.
